The four meanings of "no ads"
- Truly no ads. The game has no ad SDK at all. Revenue comes from the purchase price or an optional upgrade. Rarest, best.
- "No ads" as an in-app purchase. The game ships with ads and charges to remove them. Fine if the price is honest, but the listing's "Free" is doing heavy lifting.
- Optional rewarded ads. Ads appear only when you choose them, usually to earn a hint or extra life. Interstitials (forced full-screen ads between levels) are the deal-breaker; rewarded ads are a fair trade.
- "No popup ads!" marketing. Means banner ads exist but popups do not. Read reviews, not slogans.
Why ads hurt puzzle games specifically
A puzzle game lives in the thinking pause. An interstitial that fires between levels (or worse, mid-level after a wrong move) breaks exactly the state of mind the game exists to create. Reviews of popular tap away and block puzzle games repeat the same arc: great first 20 levels, then ad frequency climbs. The mechanics are fine; the monetization is at war with the product.
The other casualty is offline play: ad-supported games need a connection to fetch ads, so "no wifi" play quietly dies even when levels are local.
A pre-download checklist
- Scroll the listing to In-App Purchases. "Remove Ads $2.99" tells you ads ship in the box.
- Open App Privacy on the listing. "Data used to track you" combined with an ad network means targeted ads.
- Sort reviews by most recent. Ad creep shows up in reviews within weeks of a release.
- Check for forced timers. Related sin: energy systems that end your session to sell refills.
- Prefer developers whose other apps are premium or subscription. Business model is hereditary.
How OutTheyGo handles it
OutTheyGo is free with no ad SDK: no interstitials, no banners, no rewarded videos, nothing to fetch over the network. The whole level campaign, streaks, Game Center leaderboards and iCloud sync are free. The game earns money through an optional PRO upgrade (unlimited hints and revives) that you will only want after many levels, and that is the entire business model.
That is also why it works as a genuine offline puzzle game: with no ads to serve, nothing needs a connection, so levels load on a plane exactly as they do at home.
An ad-free puzzle, actually free.
Download OutTheyGo and play the whole campaign without a single ad.
FAQ
Does OutTheyGo have any ads?
No. There is no ad SDK in the app at all: no banners, no interstitials, no rewarded videos. The free game is complete; PRO is an optional upgrade for unlimited hints and revives.
Are free puzzle games always full of ads?
Not always, but usually. The exceptions are games by developers who sell an optional upgrade or premium tier instead of attention. Check the In-App Purchases list and App Privacy section before downloading anything "free".
How do I remove ads from a puzzle game I already have?
Most games offer a one-time "remove ads" purchase, listed in the listing's In-App Purchases. If the game you're playing has no such option and ads interrupt play, switching to an ad-free alternative is usually cheaper than your time.
